Liverpool identify 29-year-old replacement for Simon Mignolet

Liverpool are considering a move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer, according to the Mirror.

Deputy keeper Simon Mignolet is set to leave Anfield during the transfer window in search of first-team football and Jurgen Klopp wants to replace him with an experienced Premier League stopper.

The 29-year-old was on Liverpool’s radar last summer when a deal for Alisson Becker briefly began to stall before Roma eventually agreed to sell him to the Merseyside team.

McCarthy started the season well under Mark Hughes and earned an England call-up in November, but lost his place to Angus Gunn under new manager Ralph Hassenhuttl.

31-year-old Mignolet will seek first-team action elsewhere this summer while Loris Karius remains on loan at Besiktas for the 2019/20 season.

Alisson has been in superb form since making the switch to the Premier League, winning the Golden Glove award and helping his side secure their sixth Champions League trophy earlier this month.
