Liverpool Journalists Send Transfer Window Warning to Reds Fans

The first signing of the summer is done but there are warnings we may not get much more than that.

Liverpool have completed the signing of Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle in a deal worth an initial £1.3M. It could turn out to be a bargain of a fee for one of the hottest prospects in the Netherlands, a player wanted by both Ajax and Bayern Munich.

It’s not, though, a big name signing for the present, and some of the club’s best-connected journalists are warning fans not to expect a sudden rush on transfer deals—and particularly on big transfer deals—now that the first transfer deal has been done.

The Mirror’s David Maddock and Goal’s Neil Jones both followed up on news of Van den Berg’s signing by telling Liverpool fans not to expect any signings this year in line with past £50-60M deals for the likes of Fabinho, Naby Keïta, and Alisson.

Instead, they warn, if there are to be more signings they will be cheaper—and younger, with the focus on the club shifting to bringing in promising players who could develop over the next two to three seasons and won’t be put off by limited playing time.

There will also be a focus on giving talent already at the club, players like Rhian Brewster and Ki-Jana Hoever, and opportunity to stake their claim to a first team role for the 2019-20 season. Further, the suggestion is this approach has been decided by the manager.

While there remains a possibility the club could change their plans if the right player does become available, as things stand Jürgen Klopp believes in the team he has—and believes Liverpool’s young, developing players can provide the necessary depth.
