Liverpool “surprised” at Club World Cup inclusion

Liverpool were surprised by FIFA’s decision to include them in the Club World Cup, according to Dominic King of the Daily Mail.

The Reds became eligible for the tournament after winning the Champions League final on Saturday, and are now set to contest the trophy in November and December this year.

FIFA intend to replace the Club World Cup’s current format with a 24-team tournament to be held every fourth summer, but for now, Qatar hosting the competition later this year and in 2020 gives organisers the chance to test their stadiums ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

King revealed, however, that FIFA have not made contact with Liverpool since announcing they’re to play in the tournament, and the club were surprised at their inclusion.
