Liverpool Will Reportedly Retain Simon Mignolet for 2019-20 Season

In this case, it actually is better than a new signing.

Heading into the summer transfer window, Liverpool looked to have three needs: a fullback, a versatile forward, and a goalkeeper. It appears they no longer need the latter because, as of today, Simon Mignolet is set to stay at Anfield.

A year after pushing for a move away in search of playing time after the club signed Alisson from Roma, The Times’ Paul Joyce says that the 31-year-old goalkeeper and the club are in agreement that he will remain for the 2019-20 season.

While it might be news that lacks the excitement—and pictures of the player leaning on the club’s official channels, obviously—that comes with a new signing, it is inarguably very, very good news for the Reds that Mignolet is staying.

It is hard to imagine them doing better than Mignolet as second choice to Alisson, and certainly any new goalkeeper they brought in would have come with more question marks about their ability to adapt to the role as number two.

There also would have been questions of fit, given how well-liked a member of the squad Mignolet has been. Keeping him around may wasn’t something anyone expected—but it’s the best possible “new signing” the club could make.
