Liverpool Expect Dejan Lovren to Stay for 2019-20 Season

Despite AC Milan interest, the club reportedly don’t expect the veteran defender to depart.

With little to go on when it comes to incoming transfers, the biggest solidly sourced story so far this summer for Liverpool has involved a potential departure for Dejan Lovren, with widespread reports that AC Milan have targeted him to strengthen their defence.

However, Liverpool expect the centre half to remain at the club for the 2019-20 season, are not looking to sell him, and have heard nothing from Lovren’s end suggesting the player is interested in leaving Anfield. That’s the story today from The Echo’s James Pearce.

Lovren, who turns 30 tomorrow, had a difficult 2018-19 season at the club, with injuries and strong performances by others appearing to relegate him to fourth on the depth chart. Still, it’s no secret that manager Jürgen Klopp rates the Croatian international highly.

As such, and with no particular need for Liverpool to sell this summer and keeping last season’s 97-point, Champions League winning side together a priority, it is hardly surprising to learn that the club would rather keep hold of Lovren at the end of the day.

That isn’t news, really. What might be is that, at least as the club are aware, Lovren appears happy to stay put at Anfield even if it means fighting for minutes as part of a very strong centre half depth chart including Virgil van Dijk, Joël Matip, and Joe Gomez.

All things considered that’s positive news for the club and fans—and a potential blow to Milan, who were already reportedly struggling to figure out how to make signing Lovren work for them given their financial issues.
