Naby Keita returns to Liverpool following injury in Egypt

Naby Keita returned to Liverpool yesterday evening after picking up a knock on international duty for Guinea on Wednesday, according to the Mirror.

The 24-year-old will undergo examination on Merseyside on a thigh injury sustained against Nigeria, in a game that Guinea went on to lose 1-0.

Keita was substituted after 70 minutes following the injury, replaced by Lass Bangoura. He was left on the bench for Guinea’s next Africa Cup of Nations group game against Burundi on Sunday, which they won 2-0.

According to journalist Amadou Makadji, Liverpool’s No.8 took a private plane back to England following the Burundi clash yesterday but is expected to return to Egypt in three days’ time.

Guinea manager Paul Put previously commented on Keita’s fitness, stating: “If Naby is 100 per cent ready, we will not hesitate to start with him but it depends on him too.

“You know he had an injury. It was not known if he would participate in the Afcon. We’ve done everything to prepare Naby.

“He trains at 200 per cent. I think he is physically ready. If he’s mentally ready, I think he’ll start the game.”

It remains to be seen whether or not the midfielder will have adequately recovered from the injury to resume his duties with Guinea straight away.
