This one won’t go away

Ryan Kent went on loan to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers last season. Ryan Kent did well at Steven Gerrard’s Rangers last season. Steven Gerrard wants Ryan Kent again at Rangers this season.

Only problem is they have, relatively speaking, no money.

That seems to have ruled out a permanent move for the winger. But what Gerrard still believes is possible is another loan, even if that wouldn’t be ideal for Liverpool.

“Am I willing to wait until the last day of the window for Kent? I’m willing to wait until the last second,” Gerrard told Scottish newspaper The Herald. “I’ll give it to the very last second to get Ryan back here.

“He’s an exception because he was outstanding last year. I feel he’s ready to go again, with the confidence he should have from last season.

“But we’re still talking about a player who belongs to Liverpool. They’ll make the decision on him and we’ll be totally respectful to the club and Jurgen Klopp.

“Everyone knows I want him back and I’ll give it until the last second. But if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.

“The truth is we want him back. I haven’t spoken to him for a while, so we’ll wait patiently to see if he wants to come back and respect Liverpool’s decision.”

It’s a tough one because Kent clearly settled well at Ibrox last term. Finding a good spot for these players is tough, and if you’re not careful, they can end up just bouncing around the Championship and League One for years without ever really pushing on. Kent found a good spot at Rangers. The issue is whether he can really do that much developing in the Scottish Premiership, and if not, surely the club would be better off just selling him now. And Rangers don’t seem able to meet the asking price.

We’d suspect Steven Gerrard will be left disappointed here.
