New goalkeeper Adrián plans to integrate himself into squad by buying into the challenges that face Liverpool in the upcoming season.

Well, Liverpool’s quiet off-season got a sudden rash of noise over the last 24 hours. First, rumblings emerged that Simon Mignolet would be off to Belgium in search of starters minutes. Shortly after that was confirmed, Liverpool were quickly linked and then the official site announced, that Spanish goalkeeper Adrián would be Mignolet’s replacement.

In this whirlwind and frenzied moment, Liverpool found themselves in a position we’d expected to have been past in this window: the concept of new signings coming in. Granted, this particular circumstance was predicated on a giant hole existing due to Mignolet’s sudden departure. Still, it was a scenario that Liverpool fans found at least mildly surprising.

Now, Liverpool’s newest signing and prime back up to Alisson Becker has commented on this hectic turn around in his first interview with the official site. Among some interesting talking points are the reasons he ended up choosing to come to Merseyside in the first place.

The Spanish keeper noted that he was drawn to the challenge of winning trophies for a big club like Liverpool. Which makes loads of sense: I would imagine that, for some, the ability to work in environs for a club as successful as Liverpool and a manager as beloved as Klopp, would be a prime draw.

What was also interesting was that Adrián was both confident and humble in recognizing his role as backup while maintaining his belief that he could challenge Alisson Becker for a starting role.

“It’s a big challenge for me to work with Alisson – he is in great form in the last few seasons, he’s showing he’s at a great level, one of the best in the world I would say. I’m happy to work; competition is great and makes us much better. I come here to fight, to give a push to him as well like a teammate, and also push for the No.1.”

Those words, while unsurprising, are likely what you hope to hear from a No. 2 keeper. He’s there to provide cover for Alisson in case of an injury and to ensure that quality at that position doesn’t degrade. It can be a role that is difficult for some to manage, but it appears that Adrián has a realistic and healthy outlook on the whole circumstance. Here’s hoping that he can provide quality on the pitch and continue to push Alisson off of it.
