Gini Wijnaldum Wants Points No Matter How They Come

The Dutch midfielder praised his team for winning against Southampton, despite being less than convincing.

After a long, tough, ugly game on Saturday, Liverpool took all three points back home from St. Mary’s after beating Southampton 2-1. The match came at an awkward time, after the team had played out 120 minutes and penalties in Istanbul less than 72 hours before taking the pitch for their second game of the league season.

To come away with three points under those circumstances, and without Alisson, was its own victory. But that’s only two games and there’s still another 36 to power through before May.

Gini Wijnaldum understands the power of three points, no matter how tough it was to watch.

“I don’t think you always see a team play well for 90 minutes,” he said. “We just have to make sure we win games.

”Basically it doesn’t matter how you win games, you just have to learn and use the experience that you have because we won’t play a game 90 minutes counter-pressing or have everything go well during a game.

“Sometimes you have games like at Southampton where they score an unlucky goal and then the fans get behind them and they believe in a good result and it is going to be difficult. In those moments you have to use your quality and your experience and still try to win the game.

”I don’t think it is necessary to play well for 90 minutes because that is almost impossible but to win games, just use the experience that we have.”

Arsenal are coming up next, and they’ll likely be a more difficult task than Norwich and Southampton, so hopefully the Reds can manage to extend their winning ways for another game on Saturday.
