Jamie Redknapp waxes lyrical about Sadio Mane

Jamie Redknapp says that Sadio Mane is making a compelling case to be considered Liverpool’s most important player this season.

Liverpool looked extremely poor against Southampton during the opening exchanges at St. Mary’s but Sadio Mane’s moment of magic turned the game on its head.

He cut in from the left flank and, under pressure from two players, whipped the ball into the top right-hand corner, scoring his third goal of the week after his classy showing in Instanbul on Wednesday.

“Sadio Mane is making a great case to be considered Liverpool’s main man above Mohamed Salah,” wrote Redknapp for the Daily Mail.

“The 27-year-old is producing magic on the pitch and would walk into any team. He showed that against Southampton, scoring a screamer then setting up Roberto Firmino to confirm the 2-1 win.

“No one has scored more Premier League goals than him in 2019. He took his tally to 15 on Saturday, and not a single one of those has come from the penalty spot. In Liverpool’s last 30 games, Mane has scored 20 goals, Salah has put away 12 and Firmino eight.”

Liverpool have won their first two games of the season and will be emboldened by the fact that Manchester City have already dropped points after they were held to a 2-2 draw at the Etihad on Saturday.

Of course, it’s still early days but the Reds couldn’t have hoped for much more from the first two weeks of the 2019/20 Premier League season but Jurgen Klopp’s side needs to improve as they haven’t been anywhere near as good as they were last season.

Surprisingly, they have looked loose at the back but that might have to do with Alisson’s injury absence.
