Loan Watch: Grujic and Ojo Find the Net

Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson wasn’t the only one to strike gold over the weekend: Marko Grujic and Sheyi Ojo also got in on the goal-scoring.

It was a big weekend for Liverpool Football Club. A win that was just enough against lower competition - a banana peel game of sorts - wedged between a UEFA Super Cup win and an impending tilt against top four hopefuls in Arsenal. Liverpool luckily weren’t caught out and did just enough in their match against Southampton to put their entire focus on Unai Emery’s men this weekend.

But the club also had its eyes on the returns of a few loanees. We’ve already written about the cracker - fortunate cracker - scored by Harry Wilson for AFC Bournemouth on the weekend to open his Premier League account. But it seems he had some company among the Young Reds Abroad (YRA) in etching their name into their respective clubs’ goal ledgers.

First, midfielder Marko Grujic, on loan to Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, scored a wonderful goal in what end up being a draw with German giants, Bayern Munich. The midfielder has been on the cusp of Liverpool’s first team set up for the past few years and the club decided extending his successful loan in Germany was the best idea for him this year. Thus far, it looks a fair gambit and one can only wonder what good things a developed Grujic might accomplish under Klopp’s set up.

Elsewhere, winger Sheyi Ojo has started his loan spell with Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in fine form by striking on behalf of the Scottish side in their Europa League clash against St. Joseph’s of Gibraltar. Ojo’s goal helped pad the tally in a lopsided victory for Rangers as they saw the competition off, 4-nil. Ojo is another youngster who’s been on the cusp for Liverpool and the lad just signed a new professional contract about this team last year. More performances like this and I’m sure he’ll warrant a long look from the decision makers at Liverpool.

Lots to be excited about with regards to Liverpool’s loanees thus far in this early period. Here’s hoping they and the other contingent of the YRA will continue to make further strides in their development. Everyone knows how much the fanbase would love to cheer on players who’ve come through the Academy.
