Jürgen Klopp Provides an Update on Alisson’s Recovery

The Liverpool goalkeeper is progressing well but the manager didn’t offer a return date.

The second string goal keeper situation at Liverpool got a little stronger with the addition of Adrián from West Ham United. Little did we know that the Spaniard would be filling in for Alisson so soon. A calf injury took Alisson out of the opening match against Norwich City and Adrián has seen Liverpool through two wins in the Premier League and a dramatic Super Cup penalty shoot-out victory. Things have been good but still, where’s Alisson and when is he coming back.

Jürgen Klopp gave a fairly positive account of Alisson’s recovery at his pre-Arsenal press conference. The Brazilian keeper was always going to be out for weeks and weeks but the hope of an early return has always been on the minds of Liverpool supporters.

“Not that close,” said Klopp when asked to gauge Alisson’s proximity to first-team involvement. “I had lunch with him today, so at least he can eat.”

“It looks good, he’s in good shape, good mood. But it will take time. I don’t know exactly. Nobody told me a date. We didn’t ask. We only give him the time he needs. But it looks good.

“In the beginning, he was on crutches, which is normal with the injury he had. They are not there anymore. So, he walks normal. He can really train now completely different to a week ago.

“I think, from now on it will go quick, but how quick I don’t know.”

Southampton really tested Adrián’s composure with the ball at his feet and that aspect of the goalkeepers game is certainly being worked out in training. But even when the great Alisson arrived the team needed to adjust to his skillset over several weeks. There were blunders.

That’s not to say that Adrián’s howler at Southampton wasn’t his own damn fault, because it was. But I’m choosing to believe that it’s been dealt with and has a very low probability of happening again. In the great, wake of Alisson’s absence, just let me have this small comfort.
