Don’t Hold Your Breath For Future Liverpool Manager Virgil Van Dijk

Or even former player/current pundit Virgil Van Dijk.

Everyone knows that once a player’s playing career ends, there’s not a lot of options leftover for them unless they had a backup plan. Some go into punditry, some go into managing, some go into reality television, and a lucky few are able to live out their retirements in peace until they’re called upon to represent their favorite former clubs as Legends. In an interview with Optus Sport, Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk ruled out two of those options for his future. At least for now.

“At the beginning of my career I thought I might be a manager but at this point I don’t think I will become a manager,” Van Dijk told the Australian outlet.

“The world can be very cruel...there are a lot of people that have opinions and that can affect you - if you have the choice you’d rather not be in those kind of situations.

”But I think I will definitely be involved in football. I won’t be a pundit because you have to be saying certain things that you might not even want to, but you have to.

”We’ll see, I think I have a good eye for spotting talent so maybe I’ll do something like that.”

With his performances for Liverpool since he signed from Southampton for that record breaking (at the time) fee, he’s already reached arguable legendary status. Surely once he retires he’ll be one of the first names on the list to bring back for Liverpool Legends games (can you imagine an Agger/Van Dijk partnership???) — and Van Dijk was happy to indulge the idea of staying part of the Liverpool family.

“Everyone that plays for Liverpool always stays in the Liverpool family,” Van Dijk continued.

”I’m very happy to have already been welcomed into the LFC family, I’m a part of history having won the Champions League and hopefully we keep making history.

”Other than that I just want to be remembered as a fantastic player that gave everything for the team and enjoy every bit of it.”

If that’s all he needs, then that’s already been accomplished — even after his first game in a Red shirt when he scored that header in a Merseyside derby. Now he’s added a Champions League winner medal to his closet, and a UEFA Super Cup. Hopefully the Premier League isn’t far behind and then he’ll truly become a legend.
