Liverpool Legend Certain Defence Will Improve as Season Progresses

John Barnes isn’t worried that the Reds haven’t kept a clean sheet so far in their 2019-20 campaign.

Liverpool haven’t looked at their dominant defensive best to kick off the 2019-20 season, but what matters most is that they’ve taken maximum points from their opening Premier League fixtures and won some silverware in the UEFA Super Cup.

Those results are what matters, and with a strong core that proved their quality last season, the rest will come as the season progresses and the players reach full match fitness. Or at least that’s what former Red John Barnes says he’s counting on.

“They’ve got six points, which is good,” Barnes told The Sport Review. “In the first couple of games you can have a few teething problems. In the Norwich and Southampton games they did allow them some opportunities. That’s very unlike Liverpool.

“They haven’t paid for it, [so] the most important thing is that they’ve got the six points. They will improve. You always see some funny results in the first couple of games. We’ll have a much better assessment after seven or eight games.”

Between the league matches against Norwich and Southampton, the Super Cup against Chelsea, and the Community Shield that they lost on penalties to Manchester City, the Reds have yet to secure a clean sheet since the 2019-20 campaign started.

Last season, by comparison, they had clean sheets in their first three games and didn’t concede until September. On the other hand, this season it does feel like the attack is starting off in better form—and, most importantly, they have six points.

“You’re always going to have a few problems early on,” Barnes reiterated. “But the pleasing thing is that they’ve got six points and are top of the league.”
