The captain wants to start 2019-20 on a winning note by beating Manchester City in the Community Shield.

The Community Shield is a bit of an odd trophy. It’s there, it exists, and obviously once you’re in it it’s better to win than to lose. Beyond that, though, it’s not the sort of thing the clubs, players, or fans give an awful lot of thought to.

Still, it’s coming up on Sunday, and Liverpool are in it. So they’ll be trying to win. Because Liverpool want to win everything they can and every game they’re in and starting off with a victory on Sunday helps to set the tone for their goals.

“Our aim is, and has to be, to go into every game in every competition with the mindset of winning,” said captain Jordan Henderson when asked about the importance of Sunday’s game against the defending Premier League champions.

“It’s a competition Liverpool have always taken seriously, so that brings a responsibility for whoever gets picked to do everything we can to win. It’s the next game for us and therefore the next one we can win—so that’s our attitude.”

This will mark the 22nd time Liverpool have been in the Community Shield—formerly the Charity Shield—having previously won it 15 times and lost on six occasions. Their last appearance was in 2006, when they beat Chelsea 2-1.

And while it’s not a trophy the club list amongst their achievements on their trophy wall, it still is a trophy. One they have a history in. So they will try to win it, because it’s there to be won and also to help set the tone for what’s to come.

“We’ve huge respect for City and what they achieved last season,” Henderson added. “We also respect they’ll be a big force again this season—but it isn’t about anything other than doing our best to win.”
