Liverpool dodged a bullet by not signing Junior Firpo

Junior Firpo.

Junior Firpo turned in an awful defensive display against Granada on Saturday as Barcelona slipped to their second league defeat of the season.

The Reds were linked with a move for the Spanish left back but ultimately decided against signing a backup to the tenacious Andy Robertson and Jurgen Klopp’s decision to not sign the 23-year-old has been vindicated.

Barcelona were beaten by newly promoted side Granada as their awful start to the season continues and Firpo was at fault for the opening goal as well as a number of other chances created by the Andalusians.

While Robertson might still get injured or suspended at some point this season which could prove costly, it seems as though Firpo wasn’t the right player to sign as his deputy.

Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards have proven time and time again that they are experts in the transfer market and although there is still time for their transfer decision to be exploited, the Reds’ start to the campaign is proof that Liverpool have the quality to succeed this season.

The German was named The Best Manager of the Season last night while Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker were named in the Best Men’s World XI for 2019 and the fact that Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold should be been nominated speaks volumes about the quality in Liverpool’s squad.

The Reds face MK Dons in the League Cup tomorrow night which should afford key players a well-deserved rest after their clutch win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
