Liverpool to Face CF Monterrey, Hienghene Sport, or Hosts in Club World Cup

The Reds’ likeliest opponents in the semi-final are the CONCACAF champions.

For Liverpool and the club’s fans, this December’s Club World Cup is a bit of an odd one, a tournament that adds to an already congested fixture list and that will require a quick trip to Qatar—but one that could see them add a unique trophy to the cabinet.

It would also, if they win it, mean they get to wear a shiny FIFA badge identifying them as not just Champions of Europe, but Champions of Earth. So that’d be nice. And if they want to get that, they now have a slightly better idea of who they will have to beat.

At today’s quarter- and semi-final drawing, Liverpool learned that when they enter at the semi-final stage on December 18th, they will face either Liga MX’s CONCACAF champions CF Monterrey or the winner of the Club World Cup’s first qualifying round.

That qualifying match was already set, pitting Oceania champs Hienghene Sport against host club Al-Sadd SC, and Monterrey will be heavily favoured against whichever of them advances from that opening qualifier to the quarter-final when they join in.

On the other quarter-final, ES Tunis will face the as yet to be determined Asian champions, with the winner going on to face the as yet to be determined South American champions—who will be favourted to end up facing Liverpool in the final on December 21st.
