Liverpool in talks to agree contract extension with James Milner

James Pearce says that might be ‘tricky’ for Liverpool to get a deal done for James Milner as the midfielder has high wages.

The 33-year-old might not be a regular starter for Liverpool but he is still a key member of the squad and retaining his experience and ability is important for the Reds.

Writing during a Q&A for The Athletic, Pearce said: “The hope is that it gets sorted in the next few months.

“Milner spoke in pre-season about how he was still waiting for talks to start. He made it clear to the club at the back end of last season that he was keen to stay beyond the summer of 2020.

“It’s a tricky one as he’s a high wage earner having been signed on a free but I really hope they can agree at least a 12-month extension. He’s a model pro and what he gives this team extends far beyond his performances on the pitch.”

While he might be a senior player, Milner might need to accept lower wages to stay at the club but even if it’s for just one year, keeping the Premier League veteran at the club is an important move for the Reds to make.

His ability to come on late in games to close up shop and his level head during big games has been a crutch that Jurgen Klopp has come to rely on in the last two years.
