Supercomputer makes Liverpool vs. Newcastle prediction

A supercomputer used by FiveThirtyEight to crunch stats from Opta has revealed that Newcastle have a 3% chance of beating Liverpool on Sunday.

In a revision to the ‘Soccer Power Index’, “a rating mechanism for football teams which now takes account of over half a million matches”, it has been revealed that the Magpies have a 3% chance of beating the Reds.

Their chances of a draw stand at a slightly more promising 12% but Liverpool have an 85% chance of winning, according to the numbers crunched by FiveThirtyEight.

Of course, in the Premier League, there is never a guarantee that a result will go in one side’s favour and after beating Spurs before the international break, Liverpool need to be wary of the Reds.

Not only are Liverpool top of the Premier League after a summer that followed the club’s sixth European Cup triumph but the Reds haven’t lost at Anfield since April 2017 when Crystal Palace snatched a win thanks to Sam Allardyce’s atrocious tactics.

Jurgen Klopp’s side might have looked a bit shaky at the back at the start of the season when it appeared all too easy for the likes of Olivier Giroud and Teemu Pukki to get behind the Reds but a dominant display against Burnley marked the return of Liverpool’s imperious defending.

Newcastle visit Anfield at lunchtime on Saturday and a win will send the Reds five points clear of Manchester City until they face Norwich City at Carrow Road later in the afternoon.
