James Pearce provides quadruple contract update

James Pearce writes for the Athletic that Liverpool have entered into preliminary contract talks with James Milner’s agent and provided an update on van Dijk, Matip and Wijnaldum’s contract situation.
The report claims that with Milner in the final year of his contract, Liverpool have now entered into ‘preliminary talks’ with his agent and that ‘more dialogue is set to follow.
James Milner has been an outstanding servant for Liverpool and amazingly didn’t cost the club a single cent to sign from Manchester City and the hope is that he signs a contract extension to keep him at the club.
Pearce went on to say that with Virgil van Dijk’s current deal not set to expire for four years, Liverpool have no plans to extend it as things stand and after reports from Italy claimed the Dutchman has no interest in a Real Madrid move despite interest from Zinedine Zidane, there is no real need to agree an extension.
Georginio Wijnaldum, whose Liverpool contract expires in 2021, isn’t a priority currently but will be addressed before the end of his terms while Joel Matip has been handed a 12-month contract extension.
There was a clause in his existing agreement with the club that allowed the club to trigger the extra year which means, just like Wijnaldum, he is tied to Liverpool until July 2020.
Sporting director Michael Edwards has worked overtime over the last year or so to ensure Jurgen Klopp’s key players are kept under lock and key with several contract extensions signed in recent times.
