The Brazilian’s performance was described as “frightening”

It’s records week in, week out for Liverpool FC these days. After etching their name in the club history books with a 13th straight league victory two weeks ago, the Reds set another record in an 3-1 win over Newcastle to become the fourth team ever in the English top flight to win 14 straight league games and the first to do it while scoring at least two goals in each match.

It was a vital result in the title race and an entertaining performance, and there was no one who has proved to be more entertainingly vital to Liverpool’s success than Roberto Firmino, provider of two fabulous assists on the day. Despite a well-worked equalizer from Sadio Mané in the 30th minute following Jetro Willems early goal for the Magpies, the Reds had looked staid with Jürgen Klopp opting for a front line of Mané, Divock Origi and Mohamed Salah.

An injury to Origi forced the manager into bringing the Brazilian on from his rest to immediate and dazzling effect. The 27-year-old’s inimitable combination of graft and flair quickly led to trademark pressing action that resulted in an assist for Mané’s second before half time. The second period saw a whirlwind of flicks and tricks, with a particularly outrageous one leading to Salah’s match-sealing goal.

Toon hearts plummeted, teammates were in awe and despite Salah putting it into the net, it was the Firmino song that burst out around Anfield to honor the skill.

“It was a special goal,” Andy Robertson said after the match. “Bobby’s vision is frightening and Mo’s finished it off.”

Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce singled the Liverpool no. 9 out for praise in particular, “He drops into them little areas where he’s very difficult to pick up,” the Magpies boss told BT Sport. “That’s the standard they have.

“You’re a bit relieved when he’s not starting. He’s a terrific player.”

Si Señor. Si.
