Dayot Upamecano available for £53m but Liverpool don't need him

Reports claim that RB Leipzig starlet is available for £53million but with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez on hand, Liverpool don’t need to move for him.

The Reds announced on Friday that Joel Matip had signed a new deal and will spend the next five years as a Liverpool player after proving his worth to Jurgen Klopp with a world-class 10-month spell.

When the Cameroonian picked up a knock against Sheffield United, fans were dismayed which was a perfect representation of the defender’s importance to his side’s fortunes.

A good way to portray Matip’s importance to Liverpool is by considering that the likes of Dayot Upamecano are available for transfer at cut prices and the Reds aren’t interested.

The Daily Mail cite a report from Football Leaks from 2018 which revealed that Upamecano’s contract includes a clause which reduces his £86m release clause by £17million per year with the Frenchman free to leave Leipzig next summer for just £53m.

While Dejan Lovren will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez represent the future of the club’s defence and the fact that future world-beaters like Upamecano are unneeded is a testament to the work that Klopp has done at Anfield.

Liverpool have the strongest defence in the Premier League and have conceded just six goals this season.
