Valencia sit in last place in La Liga with one point after five games and have the second worst goal differential in Spain.

Liverpool made just two senior signings over the past summer, bringing in Federico Chiesa from Juventus to strengthen the attack and signing Georgia and Valencia star shot stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili to a delayed deal that will see him arrive at Anfield next summer.

In the meantime, though, Mamardashvili’s focus remains on Valencia, who have started the season in dire form and find themselves on just one point after five games. It’s a return that means Los Ches sit bottom of the La Liga table—and with the second worst goal differential in Spain.

“We have to win again and with the help of The Mestalla we will,” he told local journalists this week during a break in training. “The important thing is to win the next two games and recover this situation. We have to change the dynamics because the five games have been very difficult.

“We didn’t win against Barca but we played very well and took a point against Villarreal. We have to take points and follow this up at home. We had five difficult games but now we have to go forward, pick up points, and recover this situation. It is not easy but I believe we can.”

A 1-1 draw at home against ten-man Villarreal on August 31st remains their only point of the season, and they returned from the international break by losing 3-0 at Atletico Madrid. Their other losses have comes against Bilbao, Celta Vigo, and Barcelona.

On paper, it’s a run of fixtures that were always going to make for a difficult start to the season, but it’s also a run where more than a single point would have reasonably been expected of the club and that along with Valencia’s struggles at both ends of the pitch have been noteworthy.

Upcoming games at home against Girona and then Osasuna—10th and 13th in the table respectively—now look like must win games, and certainly anything less than at least a win, a draw, and four points could see Valencia’s hopes of avoiding relegation in serious danger.
