How Nike will increase Liverpool transfer coffers
Nike could be Liverpool’s new kit partner if things go well in court for the Merseysiders this week and it would mean big things in the transfer market.
As is well known, football transfer fees are amortised over the course of the contract.
So for instance, Liverpool paid a lump sum up front to sign Virgil van Dijk and pay an annual fee to settle the remainder of the amount owed to Southampton.
This process is the reason for Barcelona owing Liverpool millions over Philippe Coutinho despite the fact that he is on loan at Bayern Munich.
If Nike becomes partnered with Liverpool, football finance guru Mo Chatra wrote on Twitter that it could mean an extra £55m per season that can go straight into settling transfer fees.
In the past, it might have meant that signing players for over £70m was unrealistic unless the club sold players like Coutinho to make money for transfers but Liverpool will be able to compete more fiercely with the likes of Manchester City and PSG.
Targeting the likes of Jadon Sancho, Kai Havertz and Kylian Mbappe will become a lot more realistic and less risky for the Reds.
