Michael Edwards deserves credit for Ballon d'Or nominations

Liverpool goal celebration.

Michael Edwards deserves praise for his work behind the scenes after Liverpool had seven players nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

According to the Telegraph, the Reds’ seven nominees were Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Gini Wijnaldum and Alisson Becker.

Klopp’s joked that when he heard Liverpool had seven nominees he asked: “Who is not nominated?” Despite the joke, it’s an amazing sign of the progress that Liverpool have made under Jurgen Klopp that essentially the entire starting XI was nominated.

But Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s tireless sporting director, deserves praise for his work in either signing each of those players or negotiating a new contract for them.

Roberto Firmino.

His negotiating ability helped the club sign Mohamed Salah for just £36m, beat Manchester City and Chelsea to Virgil van Dijk and extend the contracts of so many important Liverpool players, with Joel Matip recently extending his current deal.

While many fans are worried about what will happen when Klopp leaves in a couple of years, as FSG’s employee, Edwards will likely remain at the club to work his magic behind the scenes.

Fans are looking forward to what kind of magic he can work in the transfer market in the future and given his world class track record, they should be.
