VAR shortfalls discussed by Premier League and IFAB
Liverpool fans will be delighted to learn that the Premier League and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) met yesterday to discuss potential changes.
After its awful application in the Premier League on the weekend, the Liverpool Echo reports that there were three main topics on the agenda for football’s lawmakers to discuss.
First up would have been a discussion over whether or not the IFAB believe that VAR has had a positive effect on the league so far and whether or not technical director, David Elleray, a former referee, proposed any alterations.
The second major change that would have been discussed is whether or not concussion protocols need to change to give medical staff more time to assess head injuries by allowing teams to make temporary substitutions like in rugby.
Head injuries are a source of much discussion these days and given the obvious risks to a player’s health in the case of a head clash, medical staff need to be under less pressure to make a hasty decision.
Thirdly, IFAB discussed ‘on-field behaviour’ and other law changes that need to be clarified ahead of the 2020/21 season. The Echo reports that” football’s top administrators will next meet in Belfast in December.”
After Liverpool were disadvantaged by VAR at Old Trafford on Sunday, there is a huge need to address the technology’s biggest flaws as soon as possible.
