Divock Origi Feeling Good About His Growth and Role at Liverpool

The forward has come a long way over the past year and now looks a key part of one of the best teams in football.

This time last season, Divock Origi’s future seemed far from certain and the player far from comfortable in the wide role that seemed his only path to regular first team football. Now, he looks comfortable, a legitimate option for when one of Sadio Mané or Mohamed Salah need a breather.

That means that he’s playing more regularly; that even if he isn’t starting every week he’s usually seeing the pitch. Still, Origi wants to show that he can do more; wants to earn more playing time and more minutes. Which shouldn’t be hard to do given how congested the fixture list is about to get.

“I think personally I am just going game by game in terms of assessing,” Origi noted of his current role in this title challenging Liverpool side. “I’m progressing, feeling stronger game by game, trying to help the team more and more. I am finding my ways, finding the routines, how the guys play.

“I think you can tell on the pitch as well I am growing, trying to be more efficient in the last quarter which is coming slowly but steadily. I always see it as being the best I can be and I think the fact we have so much quality, I loved it because that is what helped us win the Champions League.”

It’s a healthy attitude for Origi to take, and it feels increasingly as though after a couple of seasons that saw his development stall or even take a step back, the now 24-year-old is well on his way to being the kind of player who can contribute regularly for one of the best sides in all of football.

Continue to play well and score important goals, and the minutes will continue come. Play well and score important goals, and make the decision over who starts more difficult for the manager. That’s all any player can do at the end of the day, and so far this season, Origi is certainly doing it well.

“If everyone is at their best, then choice is nothing new,” the Belgian forward added. “It is on the coach to make and we just all try to make the choice as difficult as possible for him.”
