Raheem Sterling sent home after bust up with Joe Gomez
The England FA took the decision to send Raheem Sterling home after he lost his cool with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez at St. George’s training complex.
“Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday’s game were still raw,” England boss Gareth Southgate said in a statement on the FA’s website.
“We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday.”
The Daily Mail reports that Sterling reacted aggressively to Joe Gomez greeting him at the training ground and allegedly grabbed him around the neck which prompted the decision to drop him for England’s next Euro 2020 qualifier.
The two players had initially clashed at Anfield. Gomez had picked Sterling up and shoved him backwards after the Manchester City forward clipped his heel which saw the two exchange words.
Although the two embraced after the game, Sterling clearly wasn’t as reconciliatory when they met again on Monday for international duty but the former Liverpool winger has apologised on Instagram.
He wrote: “We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.
“We move [sic] this is why we play this sport because of our love for it – me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it’s done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is.”
Liverpool went nine points clear of Manchester City with their fantastic 3-1 win on Sunday, with Chelsea and Leicester City both eight points behind the Reds after their brilliant form of late.
The international break was supposed to be a good time to reflect and plan for the next month a half of football but just a couple days in and it’s offered as many talking points as the biggest game of the season so far did.
Of course, for Liverpool fans, this is music to our ears and nothing to be worried about but for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City supporters, it’s got to be frustrating to see their best forward so rattled.
