Vincent Kompany baffled by Anfield effect

Liverpool and Anfield.

Vincent Kompany says he’s baffled by the effect that Anfield has on opposition sides as it’s unlike any other football ground in the world.

Historically, Anfield has been a place of strength for Liverpool and under Jurgen Klopp, it has been the starting point of everything special for the German.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager used the stadium’s enigmatic aura to great effect again on Sunday as the Kop powered the Reds to a monumental 3-1 victory over Manchester City.

The win pushed Liverpool up to 34 points, eight ahead of both Leicester City and Chelsea and nine ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City just 12 games into the season.

“I think that’s the biggest part I miss already is these kinds of games, competing, knowing everything is at stake,” Kompany told Sky Sports. “You lose everything is going to be taken out of proportion and if you win they’ll make you better than you already are.

“But these kinds of games at Anfield for us have been traditionally been difficult so talking about the approach [in how to win at Anfield], I still don’t think you get your best games here when you show excessive bravery.

“At many other places, you do, but in this environment, for some reason, it works against you.”

The international break will serve as an opportunity for Jurgen Klopp and co. to relax and reflect on a brilliant run of form that has seen them climb into the Premier League driving seat and buckle up.

There are still 26 games left of the season but you can already feel that something very special is brewing at Anfield.
