Andy Robertson states why Qatar trip was extra motivation for Boxing Day

Reds left-back Andy Robertson has stated that the trip to Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup provided Liverpool with extra motivation for the Boxing Day clash against Leicester City in the Premier League.

The Reds conquered Qatar by beating Monterrey in the semi-final and then Flamengo in the final.

This all took place days before the Reds faced the Foxes in the Premier League. With that being the case, many thought Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool would come back fatigued.

However, that was not the case, as Liverpool defeated Leicester City 4-0 at the King Power Stadium thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Robertson stated that the trip to Qatar was never going to be an excuse had Liverpool not claimed three points against the Foxes.

“If you can’t get up for a game for Liverpool Football Club then I don’t think you will get up for many things,” Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com.

“The lads love playing games, we get paid to play games, we enjoy playing together and we enjoy going out there and trying to work hard and trying to achieve things and that’s what we did.

“Coming back from Doha, yes it was a long flight and we had two games including extra-time but we came back world champions – if that doesn’t give us a bit of confidence then I really don’t know what would, so we were never worried about that.

“We knew our legs were ready, we’ve done everything right over the last couple of days and it was just about showing it because the excuses were there for people to jump on it, but these lads don’t give anyone any excuses.

“We are on at each other every single day and that’s why we were always going to be 100 per cent. Yes, it’s easy to say that now 4-0 up; even if we’d have lost, it wouldn’t have been down to the travel.”

The mentality of the current Liverpool squad is immense, and this stems from Klopp. No one would have blamed any of the senior players if they came back fatigued from Qatar.

December has been extremely busy for the Reds, but you would not know it if you watched them last night against Leicester City.

Liverpool’s next assignment is Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield come Sunday in the Premier League.
