Salah and Elneny To Fly To England Despite Positive COVID-19 Test
The Liverpool star has already missed both of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Togo.
Mohamed Salah will not be appearing in Sunday’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and table-topping Leicester City after returning three positive COVID-19 tests. Salah tested positive last week Friday after being pictured celebrating his brother’s wedding lacking in proper social distance measures, although he is not currently exhibiting any symptoms at this stage.

With their talisman in quarantine, Egypt still managed to win both of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. However, despite self-isolation guidelines discouraging international travel, the Reds star is set to return to England along with his compatriot Elneny on Friday, according to a statement from the Egyptian FA.
The African nation’s footballing authority revealed an ongoing dialogue with both Liverpool and Arsenal regarding the two players, saying in the statement that there had been “constant contact and coordination with the two clubs since each of them was infected with coronavirus.”
“Communication was made through captain Mohamed Fadl, a member of the five-year committee in charge of managing the Federation’s affairs at the administrative level, and Dr. Muhammad Abu Al-Ela, the doctor of the national team at the medical level, while the two players made a new swab for each. Both of them today were positive.”
The UK government allows elite athletes to avoid quarantine upon returning the country from international tournament travel, even despite testing positive. Despite the waiver, however, there is still little chance of Salah playing Sunday as Premier League rules state that players are not eligible to return to training until they have returned a negative test 10 days after their initial positive result.
The Reds’ #11 could still play in Wednesday’s Champions League fixture with Atalanta were he to test negative by early next week.
