Jurgen Klopp recalls defender from loan spell

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has recalled defender Nathaniel Phillips from his loan spell at Stuttgart to help cover the shortage of defenders at Anfield.

Liverpool are currently without centre-backs Joel Matip (knee) and Dejan Lovren (hamstring). Midfielder Fabinho, who has played at centre-half for the Reds at times, is also out injured (knee).

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are the only two senior defenders Klopp has left at his disposal, which is the key reason why Phillips has been recalled.

“Liverpool have reached an agreement with Stuttgart for Nathaniel Phillips to return from his loan spell in January,” Liverpool said in a statement.

Phillips made 11 appearances for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga 2 this season. There is a possibility that Phillips could feature for the Reds at Anfield against Everton in the FA Cup on January 5.

Phillips is yet to make his senior debut at Liverpool, but he potentially could be required over the next few months.

This decision makes sense when you consider just how short Liverpool currently are in defence. Phillips, 22, may not be a star player at Liverpool right now, but he certainly adds depth in an area the Reds need it.
