Virgil van Dijk responds to handball suggestions

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has responded to suggestions that he handled the ball before Reds forward Sadio Mane scored against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League yesterday.

Mane’s goal against Wolves at Anfield proved to be the winner, which is why there is plenty of debate regarding the events which occurred before the ball hit the back of the net.

The goal was not going to originally stand as it appeared that Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana had handled the ball right before Mane scored, but it actually come off his shoulder, which meant VAR overruled the original decision.

Wolves were furious as just before the ball found Lallana, it appeared that Van Dijk handled the ball. Nothing came of it.

When asked post-game, Van Dijk said he could not remember whether the ball come off his arm or not.

“I need to see it back. I can’t remember it,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

“I heard from you guys about handball. I thought it was complaints about the handball for Adam Lallana. The game is over. What can we do? The goal stood.”

Having watched the goal again, there is no denying that VAR made the correct decision. If you watch the replay back closely, the Dutchman never handled the ball.

VAR then rightly awarded Liverpool the goal, as Lallana did not handle the ball either. This is a case of where the technology has worked perfectly.

Liverpool are 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand.
