Joe Gomez outlines why he loves the Merseyside derby

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has stated that he loves playing in the Merseyside derby, regardless of what competition the game takes place in.

The Reds are set to face the Toffees today in the FA Cup. Considering how taxing Liverpool’s December was, there is a chance Jurgen Klopp may field a weakened team at Anfield today.

He currently only has 12 fit senior players available for selection, which does make it likely that there will be changes for today’s clash, despite the rivalry.

Liverpool are focussed on the Premier League and claiming the title. The Reds possess a 13-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.

Despite all this, Gomez appears to be a player that wants to play today, as he has outlined his love of the derby in an interview with Sky Sports.

“For me, I love every derby and it is a special game, every time,” said Gomez.

“Regardless of whether it is a Premier League game or not, we go into it looking to win and I think that is self-explanatory.

“That is something that we look forward to and whatever will be will be. Everyone wants to play.

“There is no telling what the gaffer will do but we are used to the quick turnaround now. At the same time, we want to win things, and it is the Merseyside derby and we never want to lose that.”

It is great to hear a player such as Gomez appreciate what is a superb fixture. He may not be from the city of Liverpool, but he understands the importance of the game.

It would be nice to see the first XI play against Everton today, however, everyone must consider the bigger picture.

With only 12 senior players fit at the moment, Liverpool can’t afford another injury.
