Alan Shearer backs Liverpool midfielder for Player of the Year award

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to win the Player of the Year Award for 2020.

Henderson has been magnificent all season for the Reds, and his terrific form continued during Liverpool’s 4-0 Premier League victory over Southampton at Anfield yesterday.

The Liverpool captain scored and assisted, which certainly caught the eye of Shearer. The former Newcastle forward believes Henderson’s form across the entire season is worthy of claiming the Player of the Year award come the end of 2020.

“I believe that if the season was to end tomorrow he would be my Player of the season. Absolutely no doubt about it,” Shearer told BBC Sport’s Match of the Day, as quoted by the Mirror.

“I think he was magnificent again today. The way he drove Liverpool forward, the way he kept everything moving, his attitude, his work-rate both attacking and defensively, starting moves off, can he pass it forward? Yes he can.

“He gets his reward (of his goal) because of his hard work.

“I thought he was magnificent, as he has been all season.

“What a season he’s having, absolutely incredible. Player of the season, definitely.

“When you look at some of their performances, how special Liverpool have been, whether it’s the goalkeeper, Van Dijk, or the front three, he for me has been the driving force. He’s been superb.”

The victory against the Saints gives the Reds a 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. With that being the case, Henderson could be the first Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League trophy.

Henderson has not had it easy at Liverpool since making the move from Sunderland back in 2011.

Despite Henderson dramatically improving as the years have gone by, he has struggled to win some of the Anfield faithful over. He is by no means a superstar, but he deserves more respect than what people give him.

His passing range, alongside his ability to run, remain his greatest strengths as a player. However, many simply ignore that he has quality.

It should not be forgotten that he has also lifted the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup within the past six months.
