Gary Lineker gives verdict on Saints’ penalty call against Liverpool
England legend Gary Lineker believes that Southampton had a strong shout for a penalty against Liverpool at Anfield yesterday.
Liverpool defeated Southampton 4-0 in the Premier League thanks to goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah.
The victory against the Saints gives the Reds a 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
However, before Oxlade-Chamberlain scored Liverpool’s first goal of the match, Southampton forward Danny Ings was denied a penalty.
It appeared that Reds midfielder Fabinho had tackled the Englishman quite late in the box, but the penalty was not given. Despite the decision of the referee, Lineker believes the Saints had a reason to appeal.

Goodness me @SouthamptonFC had a strong shout for a penalty turned down and @LFC went straight down the other end and scored. VAR didn’t overturn the penalty. Judge for yourself whether they should have on @BBCMOTD .

Even if it should have been awarded as a penalty, Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino had a penalty appeal turned down in the first-half.
If Firmino’s appeal was turned down, then Ings’ was certainly going to get the same treatment. Liverpool deserved the three points, and that is all that matters come the end of the day.
