Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Look to Sell Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson

Whether Liverpool make any major purchases this summer could depend on if they can sell Grujic and Wilson.

Liverpool had transfer plans for the 2020 offseason. Then coronavirus happened, leaving every club across Europe feeling uncertain about finances and the future, and as a result Liverpool have put those plans on hold.

Now, whether in the end they go ahead with any major deals will depend on whether any other clubs are interested in buying the players they’re looking to sell, with Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson said to be top of that list.

At least that’s the story being peddled by The Athletic today, who claim that the Reds are hoping to find new permanent homes for the duo who are currently out on loan with Hertha Berlin and Bournemouth, respectively.

Previously, hopes had been that the pair would fetch around £40M between them, with Xherdan Shaqiri also to be sold—potentially for as much as £30M—and with those sales funding a significant portion of any purchases.

What happens now is anyone’s guess, and a lot will depend on whether the league is able to return to action and complete the season next month. It’s reasonable, though, that Liverpool would wait to see what the market does.

If things rebound and the club are able to bring in something at least close to their pre-pandemic valuation of Grujic, Wilson, and Shaqiri, it could mean a few deals will be back on—key among them the signing of Timo Werner.

If the transfer market is quiet, though, with the club are unable to find buyers at a price they consider fair, that could signal the end of any hopes of Liverpool bringing in any new first team players this offseason.
