Liverpool’s Push for Five Substitutes Denied by Premier League Vote

The league will go ahead with plans to only allow three substitutions for the 2020-21 season.

Liverpool along with a handful of the Premier League’s top sides, looking ahead to a compressed season where they could play twice a week and still not fit every game in should they go deep in Europe and both domestic cups, wanted to see five substitutes allowed for the 2020-21 season.

Many smaller and mid-table clubs, though, were against this, preferring to see the league stick to its decision to go back to just three substitutes for the upcoming season. Today, a vote was held on the matter.

Liverpool lost, and with that the Premier League have confirmed that as originally planned there will only be three allowed substitutes this season.

Manager Jürgen Klopp had previously gone on record as saying he didn’t see the issue as one of giving some larger clubs with larger squads—like Liverpool—an advantage and instead as one of player health and safety, insisting his desire to see five substitutes allowed was “for the sake of the football players and the performance levels.”

In other news, the league is targeting a late-October return to stadiums for the fans, which for the Reds could mean that if everything goes to plan around 12,500 fans could be able to watch the match against Sheffield United at Anfield on October 24th.
