Rumour Mongering: Thiago Remains Set on Joining Liverpool

The Bayern midfielder continues to rebuff rumoured Manchester United interest as he waits on the Reds.

Over the past few days, reports of Barcelona preparing a bid for midfielder Gini Wijnaldum have begun to dominate the transfer rumour landscape for Liverpool fans to the expense of the constant rehashing of the same old Thiago Alcantara rumours.

Those rumours haven’t gone away entirely, though, and with Thiago to Liverpool being a story that seems inextricably connected to Wijnaldum’s potential departure, we check in on the latest Thiago reports bubbling about today in the German press.

The most relevant would appear to be Bild+ (for those trying to keep track at home, Bild+ is generally considered the most reliable of the Bilds, ahead of SportBild and Bild classic), who cast Manchester United as struggling also-rans in the Thiago chase.

Previously, it had been easy to read suggestions United were interested but Thiago wanted Liverpool as, perhaps, a tactic to get United to up their bid or wage offer—to convince, through a little extra cash, the player to accept a less favoured destination.

In light of the growing Wijnaldum rumours, though, it begins to seem less a case of Bayern or Thiago trying to spark a bidding war and more a case of United interest being rebuffed while the player patiently waits for the Liverpool situation to play out.
