Mané: “It Was a Top Game”

Mané talks about his two-goal game, the red card, and the advent of Thiago.

There are games that make you laugh in mild horror, and then there are games that leave you giggling in glee. Today’s Liverpool game against Chelsea was absolutely the latter. Leaving aside the scoreline (2-0 away at Stamford Bridge is nothing to sneeze at), there were some incredible stand out performances from Liverpool as well the drama of a red card and a completely unrelated penalty being saved. What more can you ask for in a game? Not much at all, per Sadio Mané.

“Obviously it was a top game, to be honest,” Mané said after said game. “It was a top game. Especially in the first half, we found it very difficult to create chances and I think when they got the red card, it made it easier. The second half, we created many chances and finally we scored two goals. I think today we deserved to win.”

Of course, that win came at the back of an obvious red from Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen, who (as Twitter user and soccer poet Zito Madu put it) threw himself on Mané like a long-separated lover.

“When [Christensen] made a foul I knew it was a red card, I even told him: ‘My friend, it’s a red card.’ After, the referee gave him a red card; so, lucky for us,” Mané added.

The card came right before the first half ended and when the second half began, so did the Time of Thiago. Mané, much like everyone else that watched the game, was suitably impressed.

“Not only me, all the world knows what he is capable of doing,” he said. “He is one of the best players in the world, so we are lucky to have Thiago in our team. And I think today he showed that he is a great player.”
