Official: Liverpool Sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich
The Reds have signed the 29-year-old superstar midfielder for a fee of £20M plus a potential £5M in add-ons.
It’s official. Thiago Alcantara is a Liverpool player, after the 29-year-old Spanish international born in Italy to Brazilian parents arrived on Merseyside this morning to complete his move from German giants Bayern Munich.
His arrival is the second signing of the summer for the Reds following the signing of left back Kostas Tsimikas, and it’s something of a coup—a superstar at his height choosing to leave one of the game’s top club sides for the challenge of Liverpool and playing under manager Jürgen Klopp.
With just a year left on his Bayern contract, it’s a bargain signing, too. Just £20M guaranteed plus a further £5M in add-ons, and with the base fee paid in equal instalments over the four years of the deal the player has now signed with Liverpool.
While there will be no rush for Alcantara to make an impact for the Reds, make no mistake, he’s being signed to be part of Klopp’s first choice eleven—and there aren’t many players in football who that could be said about.
This is a Liverpool side that over the past two years have won the Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Premier League. Midfield was one of their strongest, deepest positions. And today it got a little stronger and deeper.
Welcome to Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara.
