So sayeth the Ornacle.

Over a short window of four days, we’ve gone from watching Thiago Alcantara sign for Liverpool FC, to seeing him put on an unexpected 45-minute debut against Chelsea. It honestly still feels surreal in many ways.

With all that said, it’s not just the fanbase that’s drinking the kool-aid on this one. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein (speaking on his weekly Ask Ornstein series), even the players were getting giddy about the thought of the Spanish international making his way to the red half of Merseyside. He also elaborated more on when the gaffer and the coaching staff decided that they need to sign Thiago:

“Liverpool needed no convincing but when Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff were watching the Champions League final over a drink – at Liverpool’s pre-season training camp in Austria – it underlined the fact that Thiago would be the perfect signing for their team and their club.

The Liverpool players were starting to get excited about the idea of this happening and the deal really came together last week in the early part. Around Monday, I think, there was a breakthrough in talks that had been taking place over the weekend.”

If it wasn’t already clear that Liverpool FC have reclaimed their spot as one of Europe’s premier clubs, the signing of a world-class player crystallises that and then some. The players’ enthusiasm for the arrival of Thiago suggests that while they’re aware that their achievements have made them heroes amongst the faithful, they know they have more work to do, more trophies to win before they cement themselves as legends. The addition of Thiago is one big step towards doing just that.
