Vicky Jepson: We’re Greedy for Goals

Liverpool scored 4 against Charlton Athletic this weekend, and the boss wants the team to keep pressing for more.

Liverpool Women are comfortably in second in the Championship standing after two wins and a tie so far this season (Sheffield United have edged into first place by virtue of having three more goals scored than Liverpool). This weekend’s victory, and the four goals netted against Charlton Athletic, are part of a very different story than the one we were resigned to witness last season, and while it’s expected that the Reds win most if not all their games in the Championship, the joy of your team winning is nothing to scoff at.

The resources poured into the club are still an issue (and nope, we’re not going to stop talking about this until it stops being an issue), but to give some credit where it’s due: Liverpool ECHO covered the game and spoke with boss Vicky Jepson after.

“Every game is an important game — we treat every game as a cup final and we want the three points, so today with four goals and a clean sheet, that is something that can make a manager smile,” Jepson told the ECHO after the final whistle blew. “It could have been a lot more but we always want more goals — we are greedy like that. That is what wins games.”

“I am happy that it was four and Charlton gave us more of a challenge than London Bees did. Charlton were so relentless in their pressing and how they were organised. They played a back five and that is a different challenge and that made it difficult to make those opportunities.”

“We have faced it three times now so we have to possess the ball calmly and with confidence and a clear plan. We have done that in every game so far and today we took those opportunities.”

If you were following Liverpool Women last season, you’ll know that scoring four goals against a defense that was both organised and posed a challenge is a huge victory for the team. Hopefully, this is a pattern that continues on Tuesday when the Reds take on Coventry away.
