Liverpool’s captain may be 30, but he says he feels 25 and wants to keep playing for Liverpool and England as long as he can

Jordan Henderson has quietly etched himself into the annals of Liverpool history as one of the greatest captains the clubs has ever had. After a less than auspicious start, partly due to his infamous C.H.A.D. transfer compatriots (Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam, and Stewart Downing for the uninitiated), Henderson proved to be an invaluable cog for both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

It’s been a quiet excellence, rarely having a Man of the Match performance. Instead, Henderson has provided a calm determination that oozes into the rest of the team. The best compliment I can pay him is you most notice Hendo when he is missing.

Unfortunately, the Liverpool captain has missed much of the start of the season due to injuries, and his presence has indeed been missed. The good news is Henderson is back to match fit and feeling fit as a fiddle.

“I was a bit unfortunate to pick up the knock I did at the end of last season with a bit of a bizarre challenge, which I picked up my knee injury, but I rehabbed well and feel really good now,” said the Liverpool and England skipper ahead of hist match against Belgium.

“I’m just turned 30 and I still feel about 25 physically and I feel as good as I’ve ever felt. I’m at a good point in my career in terms of my experience and physically there’s not even a question about anything like that at the moment.”

That is good news for Liverpool fans. His presence will be well needed this season and beyond. Speaking of beyond this season, Henderson has set himself a James Milner-esque timeline for the rest of his career.

“I want to try to play as long as possible. I still love the game and I want to play for England and Liverpool as long as I can,” said Henderson.

“I’ve always lived my life the right way in terms of doing everything right, eat the right things, sleep right and live my life the best way. So even in the next six or seven years I should hopefully be able to perform at the highest level.”

Henderson put in a solid 66 minute shift for England against Belgium, earning a penalty for his side. He returns to Liverpool ahead of a Merseyside Derby with some needed match sharpness. With Naby Keita reportedly testing positive for coronavirus while on international duty, Henderson will likely slide right back into his regular starting role against a top of the table Everton side.
