Swansea City Manager Open About Desire to Sign Harry Wilson

Despite earlier reports Swansea were out of the running, manager Steve Cooper sounds bullish.

With no permanent deal for 23-year-old Harry Wilson materialising before the close of the window for Premier League transfers, a loan to the Championship looks likely for the young winger given the likely lack of opportunity should he remain at Anfield.

One of the many rumoured possible destinations for Wilson has been Swansea City—but reports earlier today had them missing out. Despite that, Swans boss Steve Cooper doesn’t sound as though he’s compltely given up on signing the Welsh wideman.

“I do like Harry a lot,” said Cooper, who had the chance to work with Wilson at Liverpool where he was a youth coach between 2008 and 2013, at his press conference today. “It’s really good when you’ve worked with players through their development.”

“The first time I tried to sign Harry was when he was under eight when I was Wrexham, but he signed for Liverpool. But when you work with young players, it’s brilliant to see them do well. In Harry’s case he’s had some good Championship experience already.

“He’s shown he’s more than capable of excelling at that level. Premier League last year he scored seven goals, which is a good number in a team that got relegated. If we’re lucky enough to entice players of Harry’s qualities to us then that’s a good thing.”

The earlier rumours that had Swansea missing out on Wilson’s signature cast Derby County as favourites to sign him on loan. He has also been linked with Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest. The Championship transfer window closes at 5PM BST on Friday.
