Liverpool Keep Focus on the Pitch and off the Premier League Table
Being first at Christmas again puts pressure on their opponents, but this season’s Reds haven’t won anything yet.
For the third year in a row, Liverpool top the Premier League table over Christmas, and having finally broken their long title drought there’s only positives to be taken from their standing as holiday season leaders.
Yet as was the case this time last year—and the year before, for that matter, even if in the end they fell short of Manchester City in 2018-19—the players say there isn’t much attention being paid to the league table.
“It’s good, you put pressure on the opponents, the other teams who are there fighting for first place,” said goalkeeper Alisson. “But we are only thinking about ourselves, thinking about what we can do on the pitch.
“So, when you get three points with a great performance, you will be happy. We have one week to rest now, to prepare the next game and the next challenge, and to enjoy a little bit Christmas with the family.”
It’s nice to be top thanks to a thumping win over Crystal Palace and before that victory over Tottenham, but the season is only a third of the way through and the table is tight, with only six points between first and sixth.
The Reds are positioned well, then, for their title defence—but they’re a long, long way from having won anything yet in this compressed, congested season.
