Liverpool Women Win 1-0 Over London City
The Reds traveled to London to take home all three points courtesy of a Meikayla Moore goal
The Liverpool Women traveled to London today to take on the London City Lionesses. The Reds were opening the game in third place in the table, hoping to keep pace with Leicester City and Durham. Unfortunately, it was one of those games where it was not being streamed live, so we will have take some...liberties with the write up.
With the team hard hit injuries (it is a Liverpool club after all), there weren’t too many questions about the starting line up. Meikayla Moore retained her starting spot in central defense in favor of Leighanne Robe. Amalie Thustrup came back to start as the point striker with Ashley Hodson out with an injury sustained against Crystal Palace. Kirsty Linnett was a welcome addition to a thin bench after spending time as part of the play by play team as she recovered from an injury. Joining Linnett on the bench were two young goalkeepers, the aforementioned Leighanne Robe, teenagers Missy Bo Kearns and Mia Ross, and a half filled water bottle to fill out the 18.
Liverpool looked to put the issue to bed early so they wouldn’t have to rely on a teenager or a water bottle to provide a game winner. The always dynamic Rinsola Babajide got the party started in the first minute, we assume by cutting in from the left to hit a daisy cutter that the keeper juuuuuust managed to get her body in front of to stop.
In an attempt to outdo herself, Babajide went on a long run, jinking between defenders before circling back to beat them on the dribble again just for the kicks before driving in a low cross that the Lioness defender could only turn behind for a corner.
Rinsola was again looking to take matters into her own hands — er, onto her own feet? This time, a delicious corner was driven into the box, and the ball popped out to Babajide to thrash a shot that whistled just over the crossbar.
Not to be left out, the 20 year old Amy Rodgers decided to take aim at goal. The youngster lined up a free kick in the 27th minute, beat the wall, and forced the keeper to turn the ball around the post. More of that, please, Amy!
Liverpool continued to press for an opener, and earned a corner in the 31st minute. Young Amy Rodgers delicately placed the ball down, took a few steps back, and then whipped in a beautiful corner THAT IS MET BY MEIKAYLA MOORE AND GUIDED INTO THE BACK OF THE NET!!!!!! It was Moore’s first goal as a Liverpool player.
Liverpool continued to push for more, but couldn’t convert another chance despite their dominance. The half ended 1-0 in favor of the Reds.
Liverpool started the second half just like the started the game, with purpose and an eye for goal. Just seven minutes into the half, Babajide and Taylor Hinds combined around the edge of the box before the latter fizzed in a low cross. Amalie Thestrup made the run to meet the ball, but flicked it just past the outside of the post.
Yet again, Babjide was in the thick of it, this time setting up Rachael Furness, but the Northern Irishwoman couldn’t keep her effort on target. It’s ok Furney, you can’t score them all.
Furness decided she was annoyed with the comments from the author of this write up, and decided to take another crack at goal in the 74th minute. This time, she thwaped the ball with a fury and fervor, but the shot rocketed off of the crossbar!!! There probably going to need to replace the goal frame, no way it is still structurally sound after taking such a blow.
Kirsty Linnett made her return to game action in the 76th minute. She came on for Amalie Thestrup, who just never stopped running her entire time on the pitch.
Rinsola Babajide decided her name had not been mentioned in a while in this write up, so she jumped into the fray again. This time, she slid a shot from a tight angle into the side netting.
Meikayla Moore wanted to show these attackers how it is done, and got in the box yet again. Like before, she was able to guide the ball into the back of the net!!!! WHAT?!?!?! HOW IS THAT OFFSIDE REF! THAT’S A HORRIBLE CALL! BOOOOOOOO!!!!! Goal dissalowed.
In order to decrease the average age of the team, Vicky Jepson sent on Missy Bo Kearns for Amy Rodgers in the 84th minute.
The ref, feeling pity for the pitiless Lionesses and worried that the goal may fall over after taking a rocket shot off the crossbar from Furness, decided to blow the final whistle. Liverpool won 1-0, and kept pace with Leicester City and Durham, just two and one point ahead respectively at the top of the table.
Tune in next Sunday as Liverpool travel back to Durham in a massive clash in the push for promotion. Who knows, maybe it will even be streamed live for people to actually watch!
