Loris Karius Disastrous Union Berlin Loan May Be Terminated
The on-loan Liverpool goalkeeper made his first appearance on loan last night, a loss in the DFB-Pokal cup.
After two difficult seasons on loan at Besiktas, Loris Karius’ return to Germany on loan over the summer was meant to be the first step in reviving the career of the now 27-year-old shot stopper. It hasn’t worked out that way.
Karius has made just one appearance for Union Berlin this season, last night in the DFB-Pokal cup, letting in three goals in a 3-2 defeat to 2.Bundesliga side SC Paderborn that drops Union out of the competition.
Following that, there’s chatter out of Germany that Tuesday’s defeat could mark his one and only appearance for the club, with Liverpool strongly considering terminating his loan spell in the hopes of finding him a better one.
Or at least that’s Kicker’s take on it, and while it might not be the most reputable outlet in Germany, it’s hard not to think that a premature end to Karius’ time in Berlin probably makes sense if any alternative can be found.
Karius signed a new five-year deal in the summer of 2018, shortly before the Reds signed Alisson and he left for Besiktas on loan, which means he is under contract with Liverpool until the end of the 2022-23 season.
