Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Ready to Pay €30M for Lille’s Sven Botman
What do you think they’re smoking over there at Stade Pierre-Mauroy?
Earlier this week, Virgil van Dijk took to social media to let Liverpool fans know he’s hard at work rehabilitating following surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament.
The reality, though, remains that without the star Dutch colossus or promising young teammate Joe Gomez, Liverpool are dangerously thin at centre half with nearly two-thirds of the season left to play.
In the circumstances, rumours linking them with a January move for a defender are hardly surprising, and this week brings with it a new name to add to the list of potential signings: Lille’s 20-year-old Dutch U20 international Sven Botman.
According to France’s FootMercato, Liverpool’s interest is serious—maybe even €30M serious. Which sounds like a lot but is less than the €50M they claim the Reds would have been ready to pay for him.
Botman, though, could be available for that so-called cut-rate price due to Lille’s financial struggles, which is making Liverpool and supposed fellow suitors Inter Milan even more eager to deal.
Or at least that’s the story. To us, Liverpool spending €30M on a player Lille signed for just €8M last summer from Ajax—after he only ever appeared for junior side Jong Ajax and SC Heerenveen on loan—seems highly fanciful.
But we wish Lille luck in finding someone willing to pay over the odds for a young defender who’s since made 22 appearances and is yet to earn a senior cap for his national team.
