Robertson Discusses Ajax on Eve of Champions League Match
The Reds play their penultimate group stage game on Tuesday evening.
The less said about the Atalanta match last week, the better. In fact, Atalanta who? Now Liverpool gear up to play their Ajax return fixture and guarantee their spot in the round of 16.
Andy Robertson took over pre-match presser duties, because he’s one of the only first team members who remains standing. When asked about playing against European opposition, Robertson said it’s not as mysterious as it used to be.
“Ajax are a quality opposition,” he said. “We have a lot of foreign players in the Premier League now, you become more accustomed to playing against these types of players. The difference between them both isn’t as big as it maybe once was.
“But, of course, it’s a different style of play. They play in a different league and everything that goes along with it, you don’t know their players inside out as much as you do the Premier League teams.
A win would take a lot of pressure off of a Reds side struggling with massive injury problems. If they could secure passage into the next round, then the final match in Denmark against FC Midtjylland would be a formality. Letting some of their key players rest instead of traveling across the continent would be a huge relief for Klopp and his tired staff.
“We know we’re in for a tough task tomorrow night but we know what’s at stake,” Robertson said.
“We know if we win we’ll be through to the last 16 and that’s always the aim. We want to go far in this competition and by doing so, we need to get through the group stage first and foremost.
“We’ve got a chance to do that tomorrow night. It’s important we try to keep that in our minds and do everything we can to win this game and hopefully finish top of the group.”
Liverpool need one point to qualify, so even a draw would do on Tuesday. That seems a tough ask, however, from a side that has become rapidly depleted as the weeks have worn on.
